Check out my first blog @ TechTarget that goes into more detail on Campus based SDN: What makes SDN and network virtualization matter? Campus network apps
IDC had stated in May 2012 that the SDN market could reach $2B by 2016. More recently in December 2012, IDC is now saying it could reach $3.7B. In the same IDC press release, 5 of the top SDN start-ups are listed. These start-ups are largely focused on data centers. Of these 5, only Big Switch could really play in the Campus. Let’s not forget about Cisco who recently announced more on their SDN strategy. Will they lead the charge for Campus SDN?
If only the data center is being used to estimate the SDN market, it could still be underestimated once Campus Networking in conjunction with a trend like BYOD is added to the equation. Think BYOD enabling network-as-a-service into a multi-tenant based network leveraging principles of SDN across the Campus and Enterprise.
Could “cloud to data center networking” be analogous to “BYOD to campus networking”? If so, the impact of SDN could be greater than any of us have seen thus far! This would also enable the mid-size environment to adopt SDN in some fashion in the Campus (not just those with large-scale data centers)!
As always, we’ll have to wait and see how this will all play out.

Jason
